The Hebrew newspaper confirmed that Israel is secretly studying a solution to one of the biggest obstacles in the way of the “day after” issue, which is control over the Gaza Strip.
According to the Hebrew newspaper’s report, which was based on reports from the American newspaper “Washington Post”, the tripartite meeting held last week in Abu Dhabi, hosted by the UAE Foreign Minister Abdullah bin Zayed, and attended by President Joe Biden’s senior adviser on Middle East affairs, Brett McGurk, and State Department adviser Tom Sullivan, on the American side, and Minister of Strategic Affairs Ron Dermer, who is close to Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, on the Israeli side, discussed “correcting” the Palestinian Authority in cooperation with Arab and European countries and forming a peacekeeping force in the Strip.
She explained that the goal is to give a “stabilization mandate” to the modified authority, which may be headed by Salam Fayyad, who served as Palestinian prime minister from 2007 to 2013.
The UAE estimates that the Palestinian Authority will be required to receive military and intelligence support from various countries.
According to the report, despite Netanyahu’s strong opposition to the Palestinian Authority, Dermer stressed in the meeting that Israel might quietly agree to it.
The Arab countries that have emerged as potential supporters of the plan are Egypt, Morocco, Qatar and the United Arab Emirates, officials said.
Other countries supporting the US plan include Italy, Brazil, Rwanda, Indonesia and perhaps another “pioneer” from Central Asia, and the US is not absent from the list either.
According to the report, Washington will assist with command and control, as well as logistical support, from a base near the Gaza Strip in Egypt.
Diplomats have discussed seeking support for a peacekeeping and stabilization force — which could come from the UN General Assembly rather than the Security Council, for fear of a Russian veto, the newspaper reported.
