With the M3 Max chip, performance mode is no longer reserved for the 16” MacBook Pro

A small novelty will welcome users of 14-inch MacBook Pros equipped with an M3 Max chip. Indeed, the high performance mode which was until now reserved for 16 inches is now also present on Apple’s “small” professional laptop. The technical sheet which mentions this functionality does not not mention it yetbut it is a novelty which was spotted by Jason Snell in his test of new computers.

Performance mode was previously reserved for 16-inch models equipped with the Max chip (Apple image/MacGeneration).

The journalist specifies that Performance mode activates the fans audibly, without improving the measurements he made on the 14-inch MacBook Pro supplied by Apple. This is not to say that it is useless however, but it will probably be superfluous for the majority of needs and it is worth remembering that macOS will automatically increase the fan speed if you start to use the chip more heavily. This mode remains interesting to ensure success and to be certain of not experiencing slowdowns linked to the lack of active cooling.

We don’t know exactly why Apple changed its mind regarding this generation. The M1 and M2 ranges all reserved this feature for the 16-inch MacBook Pro, while the 14-inch might be configured with the same “Max” chips. The M3 family corrects the situation and allows everyone to benefit from it. Provided you still have €4,000, the entry ticket for a Mac equipped with an M3 Max chip.
