With the iPhone 15, Apple would crush the competition even more on autonomy

The iPhone 15 might go even further on autonomy thanks to the switch to TSMC’s 3 nm engraving process.

Behind the scenes, manufacturers of smartphones are still thinking regarding the next model. Apple is obviously no exception. If the generation of iPhone 14 seemed very iterative, the rumors surrounding theiPhone 15 increasingly suggest that progress will be more significant.

Evidenced by a recent article by Bloomberg, regarding the transition to 3 nm from TSMC, manufacturer of the iPhone chips and therefore of the future A17 Bionic which should equip the iPhone 15 Pro and Ultra. In view of the A16 Bionic qualityone might think that the next iteration should not reinvent the wheel, but that is without counting this famous passage to 3 nm precisely.

An effective passage from 5 nm to 3 nm

As pointed out 9to5Mac, this new fineness of engraving is expected on the M2 Pro for Macs, the A17 Bionic of the iPhone 15 therefore, then the future M3 chip. As a reminder, TSMC considers that its 4 nm engraving, present on the A16 Bionic of the iPhone 14 Pro, is only an improved version of the 5 nm process. A relatively old process. We can thus consider that Apple will really go from 5 nm to 3 nm in 2023. This is a less iterative change than it looks.

Concretely, the president of TSMC, Mark Liu, argued that the gains in energy expenditure would be very significant. Bloomberg writes the following:

TSMC said its 3nm processes offer better performance than its 5nm chips, while requiring around 35% less power.

The performance on smartphones being already very (too?) important compared to the real uses of the users, we can therefore expect a real improvement in the field of autonomy. Knowing that the iPhone 14 are already masters in the matter.

The new features expected on the iPhone 15

The iPhone 15 should therefore be a good vintage, or at least satisfy the appetite for novelties that generally surround the launches of new smartphones. Probable introduction of an iPhone 15 Ultra, transition to Dynamic Island on basic iPhones and gain in autonomy, that’s already not bad.
