“With Sinwar’s death, a new phase begins” –

«With the death of Hamas Holds Over 150 Hostages – The Gilad Shalit Case”>Yahya Sinwar, the main person responsible for the massacre of 7 October 2023 is no longer there. My belief is that a new phase must now begin: it is time for all the hostages to be released, for an immediate ceasefire to be proclaimed and that reconstruction begins in Gaza.” Thus Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, traveling to Jordan. «We will continue to support with determination every effort in this direction and for the resumption of a serious and credible political process, which leads to a two-state solution», he concludes.

With Yayha Sinwar “an open account” was settled on October 7, the day of the “worst massacre against Israel”. Benjamin Netanyahu thus addressed his citizens and the international community to celebrate the killing of the Hamas leader which occurred during an IDF operation in the Gaza Strip, probably in the Rafah area. Perhaps the most causal elimination after those of his predecessor as political leader of the group, Ismail Haniyeh, and the leader of Hezbollah, Hassan Nasrallah. In fact, Israeli troops apparently attacked a building after alerting a group of militiamen who were taking refuge inside and, only later, identified the body of a man who resembled Sinwar. Confirmation came from the tests carried out, in particular those on the dental arch: the elusive leader of Hamas, who had disappeared for weeks, is dead. But the battle, Netanyahu warned, “is not over, we will continue with all our strength until the remaining hostages are brought home. We must get to the Hamas strongholds, because that is where this killer was hiding.” It is “the end of a power made badly”, he insisted, now “Hamas will no longer be able to control the Gaza Strip”. The Israeli president, Isaac Herzog, celebrated the elimination of Sinwar and urged, now, “to act in every way” to free “the 101 kidnapped people who are held prisoner with terrible cruelty by Hamas killers”. Yoav Gallant, head of the Defense of the Jewish State, addressed a message to the inhabitants of Gaza: “Sinwar ended his life beaten, persecuted and on the run, not as a commander but as someone who cared only for himself”. He then ordered the enemies still resisting in the Palestinian enclave to “release the hostages and surrender”. “No terrorist is immune to the hand of the IDF. We will not stop until we return all the kidnapped and eliminate the monsters of Hamas.”

Sinwar’s death was also welcomed in the West. The American president, Joe Biden, spoke of a “good day for Israel, the United States and the world”, while his deputy Kamala Harris spoke of “justice done”. Biden also announced that he wanted to talk to Netanyahu about how to end the war now that Hamas has been definitively decapitated. The Foreign Minister, Antonio Tajani, who will be in Israel and Palestine next Monday, observed: “I believe that from this point of view Israel may have carried out its self-defense action. I hope that his disappearance can lead to a ceasefire in Gaza.” The enclave has been suffering from the relentless Israeli offensive for more than a year. Among the latest of the over 42 thousand victims there are also at least 16 people killed in an Israeli raid in which an UNRWA school in the Jabalia camp, in the north of the Strip, was apparently targeted. The IDF claims that the structure had been transformed by Hamas and Islamic Jihad into a command room. Claim denied by Palestinian militiamen. A truce in Gaza could also reduce tensions in Lebanon where Israel continues its operation, on land and by air, to weaken Hezbollah. The latest attacks affected the Tire area, in the south of the country. The alert therefore remains high also among the troops and in the structures of the Unifil mission, which were reached in recent days by Israeli fire. we ask Israel to rigorously comply with the rules of international law, to protect the innocent civilian population, international law and UNIFIL, the Minister of Defense, Guido Crosetto, reiterated in this regard.
