New York – Palestine called on the Security Council yesterday, Thursday, to immediately stop the Israeli war on the Gaza Strip, whether through an agreement between Tel Aviv and the Palestinian factions movement, or without it.
This came during a speech by the Palestinian representative to the United Nations, Riyad Mansour, at the UN Security Council, during its monthly session on the situation in the Middle East and Palestine, according to the official Palestinian news agency “Wafa”.
“There must be a ceasefire now, without any further conditions or ill-intentioned demands that are clearly aimed at derailing ceasefire efforts,” Mansour said.
He addressed the council members, saying: “When will you move? Whether there is an agreement or not, there is no excuse for Israel to continue killing innocent Palestinian civilians.”
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is seeking to thwart the ceasefire negotiations in Gaza, by insisting on continuing the war and not withdrawing from the Philadelphi corridor on the Egyptian border, and Netzarim in the middle of the Strip.
Regarding President Mahmoud Abbas’s possible visit to the Gaza Strip, Mansour said that the aim is to see “the horrors that our people are experiencing.”
The Palestinian delegate also called on the Council members to support and pressure to secure the President’s visit to the Gaza Strip and “to work urgently to stop the genocide and stop the crimes committed against our people.”
In his speech to the Turkish parliament, Abbas announced his intention to travel to the Gaza Strip with members of the Palestinian leadership, and called on the Security Council and the international community to secure the visit.
Regarding the health conditions in Gaza, Mansour said that Gaza has been free of polio for the past 25 years, and it does not need more paralysis and death by bombs and bullets, and now by famine and disease sponsored by the Israeli occupation.
He announced his full support for the proposal of the Secretary-General of the United Nations, Antonio Guterres, to conduct an urgent vaccination campaign to stop the spread of this disease.
The Palestinian delegate warned that any obstruction of these efforts “will serve as further evidence of Israel’s genocidal intent and actions against our people.”
In mid-August, the Ministry of Health in the Gaza Strip announced the discovery of the first case of polio in Gaza, which raised fears of the spread of the disease amid the collapse of the medical system in the Strip due to the blockade and the repercussions of the Israeli war.
With American support, Israel has been waging a devastating war on Gaza since October 7, leaving more than 133,000 Palestinians dead and wounded, most of them children and women, and more than 10,000 missing, amid massive destruction and deadly famine.
In contempt of the international community, Israel continues the war, ignoring the UN Security Council resolution calling for an immediate halt, and the International Court of Justice’s orders to take measures to prevent genocide and improve the catastrophic humanitarian situation in Gaza.
