Apple has announced a preview of a new feature called “Lockdown Mode” that will add additional protection to devices running iOS 16, iPadOS 16, and macOS 13 Ventura from hiring spyware backed by private companies and national governments infringe.
“Lockdown Mode” is expected to be released with iOS 16, iPadOS 16, and macOS 13 Ventura this fall, so that users using iPhone, iPad or Mac models can get additional protection from storing on the device. Data is stolen by spyware, giving enterprises and government agencies users greater peace of mind.
“Lockdown Mode” will provide the following protection functions:
• Messages: Blocks most additional message types except images, and disables some features such as link previews.
• Site Preview: Disables certain complex web technologies such as just-in-time compilation (JIT) unless the user excludes trusted sites from “Lockdown Mode”.
• Apple Services: Incoming invitations or requests for services, including FaceTime calls, will be blocked if the user has not previously sent the call or request to the originator.
• When the iPhone is locked, the wired connection to the computer or accessory is restricted.
• When “Lockdown Mode” is on, profile files cannot be installed and the device cannot be added to Mobile Device Management (MDM).
In addition to announcing the preview of the “Lockdown Mode” function, and planning to release a new version of the operating system this fall, Apple allocated $10 million last year as threat research funding. The Security Bounty Program has created a new category that will attract more people to exploit the “Lockdown Mode” feature vulnerability and help improve protection measures with up to $2 million in prize money.
In addition, Apple plans to donate $10 million to support the investigation, disclosure, and prevention of highly targeted cyberattacks, or state-sponsored spyware for hire and organized attacks developed by private companies.
