“With Love and Determination” was released in cinemas yesterday with a special seal of approval: France’s Grande Dame Claire Denis received the Berlinale’s Silver Bear for her direction.
Anyone who has seen the work and wonders why it was awarded an award is not wrong in their astonishment. The love triangle into which Denis throws Juliette Binoche (as Sara), Vincent Lindon (Jean) and Grégoire Colin as François is surprisingly awkward.
Not in the sense of attractive irritations owed to the emotional chaos, but simply because it feels inelegant, sometimes skittishly told.
First of all, following ten years, everything is wonderful with radio presenter Sara and ex-rugby player Jean, who has made it in the sports shop, and they still promise each other in the Paris apartment that they will have the world at their feet. Until Sara accidentally sees François – her ex and former best friend Jeans. The shadow of the past enters their lives and shakes the foundations of their love.
Along the screenplay, which Denis wrote with the author Christine Angot, something emerges that, for nostalgic reasons, might be described as a classic French relationship drama: one takes one’s emotional life so seriously, as if one had to lead the diplomatic negotiations between Russia and Ukraine. It’s getting dark. Sara and Jean don’t look like mature, real people here yet. It’s more like watching the stars Lindon and Binoche than life partners. Only when love begins to crack more and more deeply and a spiral of emotional violence unleashes itself does a splendid festival of drama develop, which deals with fragility in relationships and harmful claims of possession.
Universal moments regarding human nature emerge that have a lasting effect. Despite a few melodramatic outliers by Binoche and dialogue-heavy scenes, they help the film shine, which is lacking at the beginning.
