So what are you going to put on your Christmas table? This traditional headache is even more so this year because the rise in prices must be taken into account. Plus 12% for champagne, 20 to 30% increase for foie gras and 10% on average for salmon. As a result, sales of these flagship holiday products are already in decline. To try to sell them, hypermarkets are increasing promotional operations. But many French people limit their spending.

“Before we took it, now it’s over”

Inflation obliges, when leaving this supermarket, many customers admit to having to ignore certain luxury products which have become unaffordable. “No, no foie gras. Before, we had it, now it’s over. No scallops either because it’s expensive,” laments this retiree. And for others, the pleasures of this year will be restricted. “For champagne, before we took two or three bottles. Now, we are looking for a slightly cheaper bottle,” admits this customer. And for this consumer, no foie gras this year, “but duck mousse”.

In the carts, there are fewer holiday products than last year, despite the promotions made by this Leclerc center in Templeuve, of which Thomas Pocher is the director. “For several months, customers have been looking very closely at the amount of their purchases. And we feel that festive products are having difficulty finding their place, because champagne is still much more expensive than before, for example,” underlines he spoke to the microphone of Europe 1. According to him, the customer will therefore wait for the promotional operation or the particular reference to buy the products. “For foie gras, we are seeing a certain wait-and-see attitude among customers who may not buy the little box for a family snack before the big party and will buy it only for New Year’s Eve,” explains the manager.

And to lighten the bill, some organize themselves as a family. “We take the receipt, we share. There are eight adults, we divide by eight so that it costs less,” assures this last customer interviewed. Solutions to still enjoy a real New Year’s Eve meal.
