With cooperation between Western and Central Greece, the Mornos Bridge is being restored

The country’s first interregional project is the restoration of the Mornos Bridge, as today Friday, August 30, 2024, the Regional Governors of Western Greece Nektarios Farmakis and Central Greece Fanis Spanos, at the Directorate of the PE of Etoloakarnania, in Messolonghi, they proceeded to sign a programming contract for the implementation of the project which has a budget of 2.3 million euros.

The Mornos river has a total length of 70 kilometers and is the natural border of the prefectures of Etoloakarnania and Fokida. The old bridge of Mornos has a total length of 225.00m. and it consists of five straight amphibious arched openings with a length of approximately 45.00m each located in the administrative boundaries of the Regions of Western Greece and Central Greece. It has extensive damage to the superstructure carrier. With the cooperation of the two Regions and with the implementation body, the Directorate of Technical Projects of the Regional Unit of Fokida, the restoration works of the superstructure body and its restoration to its original condition will be carried out.

The project entitled “Restoration of Wear and Damage to the Superstructure of the Old Bridge of Mornos” has a total budget of 2.3 million euros, it is financed by the National Development Program (NDP) 2021-2025 and in particular by the Regional Program of each Region, as it is distributed by half in the two Regions.

The Regional Governor of Central Greece Fanis Spanos emphasized: “We are collaborating with the Region of Western Greece to provide a definitive solution for the rescue of a historic bridge that connects Phocis with Aitoloakarnania. Together with our friend Regional Governor Nektarios Farmakis, we secured the financing of the project, as we had promised. Today, with the signing of the programming contract, we open the way for the implementation of the project, under the supervision of the Technical Works Directorate of Phocis. We are working methodically and collaboratively to deliver the Mornou bridge back to the citizens and visitors of our country.”

Continuing, the Regional Governor of Western Greece, Nektarios Farmakis, after thanking Mr. Spanos for the cooperation, emphasized among other things: “The signing of the program contract between the Region of Western Greece and the Region of Central Greece paves the way for the rebirth of a great project that, measuring over 80 years of life. Today’s act opens new avenues for the implementation of large projects with interregional cooperation. With the Region of Central Greece, we are already cooperating very closely in actions such as the promotion of Kremasto Lake. We are now proceeding with the restoration of the Mornos Bridge. And it is certain that together we can do a lot more, opening even bigger roads towards the common development of our regions”.

The President of the Regional Council of Western Greece also attended the signing of the program contract Christos Paisios, the Vice-Regional Governors of Evrytania Aristides Tassios, Phocis George Delmouzos, Etoloakarnanias Thanasis Mavrommatis, as well as the Deputy Regional Governor for Sustainable Development and Environment Linos Bletsas.
