“Since I have been in Colombia with my husband, I can feel the love and kindness of its people (…) Its history, its culture and its food are incredible. Thank you Colombia,” these were the words with which Meghan addressed the public present at the cultural event in which she participated with Prince Harry in the middle of the Petronio Álvarez Musical Festival. The Duchess chose to give her final farewell message in Spanish, a language she learned 20 years ago when she lived in Argentina.

She also highlighted the admiration she feels for the country, taking into account the cultural wealth and history contained in each of the places she visited, adding from the stage in the company of her husband and Vice President Francia Márquez, whom the Duchess called “my friend,” host of the visit and who accompanied the entire agenda of the Duke and Duchess at her side: “I could feel this embrace from Colombia.”

Although the Duke and Duchess of Sussex fell in love with the country, they also conquered the cities in which they were present, as they got involved in each of the activities in which not only the attendees participated, but they also dared to dance to the rhythms of each cultural event such as cumbia and salsa, in addition to daring to play the drums, try the gastronomy and integrate with the people present.

As a farewell gift, the dukes received a bottle of viche, a typical liquor from the Pacific region, as well as a miniature chonta marimba as a souvenir that represented the African heritage and sounds typical of the lower Cauca region.

With a chirimía and currulao musical group where the marimba took center stage playing the classic Stand By Me and more than 200 leaders from the Colombian Pacific, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, Duke and Duchess of Sussex, were welcomed in the city of Cali on what was their last day of touring the country after having been in Bogotá, Cartagena and San Basilio de Palenque.

However, it was not all partying and dancing during the visit of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, as the background of their first arrival in Colombia fulfilled the objective of raising awareness and contributing to solutions to problems such as racism and cyberbullying.

Both took part in the forum ‘Afro Women and Power’, where they were able to learn about the leadership work carried out by midwives, cooks and other bearers of cultural tradition, who took the opportunity to talk about their commitment to maintaining their legacy above hatred and racism. Later, two other conversations were held called ‘Leadership for Life’ and ‘Legacies of Dignity’.

The four-day agenda included meetings by the Vice-President on topics such as women’s empowerment, the fight against violence and the preservation of traditional midwifery and medicine.

“I must say that from a very early age I was fortunate to feel that my voice as a woman was heard. When you know that your voice has power from such a young age it represents a success in your life and that is what we should inspire all women in the world,” Meghan added in her final speech.
