MEXICO CITY (AP) — Roberto Alvarado scored in the second half and Chivas defeated Tijuana 1-0 on Tuesday to extend their stay in first place in the Apertura de México tournament.

“Piojo” Alvarado, who was selected for Mexico in Qatar 2022, scored the only goal of the match following 66 minutes and Guadalajara achieved its fourth championship win.

Chivas now has 13 points, with which they will remain at the top of the tournament no matter what happens the rest of the day.

Tijuana remains with four units and slipped to 13th place among 18 teams in the first division.

The Xolos, led by Miguel Herrera, played with 10 men from the 45th minute following Canadian Lucas Cavallini was sent off.

Chivas had the best approaches in the first half: first with a shot from Alvarado following six minutes that was deflected by goalkeeper Antonio Rodríguez and then following 24 minutes with a shot from Alan Mozo that hit the crossbar.

Guadalajara was able to open the scoring before the break when Francisco Contreras committed a handball inside the area, but Víctor Guzmán charged through the middle and Rodríguez deflected the ball with his legs to avoid damage.

Chivas took the lead when Alvarado received a cross inside the area, dropped the ball and finished with a smooth shot that passed between the legs of goalkeeper Rodríguez.

With a goal from Argentine Facundo Lara, a Mazatlán team that played with one man less throughout the second half defeated Puebla 1-0 to get its first Apertura victory.

Lara shook the net at 50 minutes to settle the match for the Cañoneros, who had tied two of their first three games.

With the result, Mazatlán has five units and is placed in eleventh position in the championship.

The Cañoneros played with a man less since the 45th when Andrés Montaño was sent off.

Puebla remains with one unit and is placed at the bottom of the table with the same harvest as Cruz Azul, which has a better goal difference.
