With AI in simulation software first time right 3D printing

First time right 3D printing? That is getting closer thanks to AI, Altair says. The developer of design and simulation software will present the latest developments in this direction at the Manufacturing Technology Conference.

For Altair, the reason to participate in the technology conference lies mainly in the first argument: the design and simulation software and high performance cloud computing are developing at lightning speed. Altair wants to transfer manufacturing knowledge to the design engineers. “We have the techniques in-house to be able to make decisions regarding the manufacturability and performance of the end product.” says Janko Stellaard, Altair Account Manager.

Shorter time to market

Manufacturing Technology Conference is intended to increase the exchange of knowledge between design engineers and manufacturing companies, so that the entire high tech ecosystem can develop faster. “Introducing knowledge regarding manufacturability beforehand into the design process shortens the time to market,” notes Janko Stellaard of Altair. He gives the design of an injection molding product as an example. If you don’t know where a reinforcement rib should be, the design process can be delayed by a few weeks.

Algorithms solve problems that have been difficult to solve until now

High performance cloud computing

With the simulation driven design software, Altair offers design engineers the tools to directly integrate knowledge regarding manufacturability into their design process. And with the high performance computing technology in the cloud, engineers can virtually test their designs for both performance and manufacturability. “This allows you to reduce the number of physical tests with prototypes and cut costs,” explains Janko Stellaard.

AI en additive manufacturing

For Altair will focus on both the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and its role in first time right 3D metal printing. “AI is becoming indispensable in product development,” says Janko Stellaard. Algorithms solve problems that have been difficult to solve until now. Altair acquired RapidMiner last year. That develops AI and Machine Learning software with which you no longer have to script yourself. “So we can offer low/no code solutions for companies with little or no programming knowledge.” This applies, for example, to additive manufacturing.

First time right

With the new simulation software, which uses AI, Altair is getting closer to first time right 3D printing with metal. The big advantage that AI provides is that you can generate synthetic data with which the AI algorithms can work. Labeling and clustering of data is done automatically, allowing you to describe even more variations. “Instead of simulating a day or a week, you now see results within seconds.” Expert AI is such a new product that Altair has developed. Several European and American automotive OEMs have already deployed Expert AI for both casting and additive manufacturing. In additive manufacturing, the algorithms investigate which design and which positioning on the build plate requires the least support structure. Santhanu Jana, manager of the global manufacturing team at Altair: “This takes us to first time right.”
