Dr. Hassan Hassouna, Professor of Nutrition at the National Research Center, explained that there was a study conducted in America on women, which revealed that plums help women protect once morest osteoporosis.
Hassouna continued, during a telephone interview with the “8 Al-Sabah” program, broadcast on the “DMC” satellite channel, that this study lasted for 6 months, and there was another experiment that lasted for a year, and it was noted that plum improves bone health and reduces inflammation.
He pointed out that plums are very useful for women over 55 years of age, and if they continue to eat plums for 6 months, this will help them improve bone health and reduce inflammation that leads to osteoporosis.
He added that plums contain many nutritional benefits, because they contain minerals, calcium, magnesium, potassium and vitamin K, and contain compounds that have antioxidant properties that prevent cell damage and other anti-inflammatory properties that improve bone health.
He stressed that the plum has an effect on men as well, because osteoporosis does not only affect women, pointing out that osteoporosis comes at any age.
He said that the appropriate amount of plums to improve bone health per day is to eat from 5 to 6 fruits per day, explaining that there are other foods that protect the bones, including dairy products, a cup of milk per day gives more than 300 mg of calcium, as well as fatty fish.
He continued, “Exposure to the sun is very important for bone health, because it provides us with vitamin D,” stressing that age, genetics and wrong nutrition throughout life increase the risk of osteoporosis.
