With a plaster on his ear: Trump makes his first public appearance since the assassination attempt

He raised his fist once more and was cheered by the delegates in the event hall. There he posed with his candidate for vice president, JD Vance. The crowd shouted “Fight, fight, fight!” Trump looked exhausted. It is his first official appearance since the assassination attempt at the weekend.

He was injured in the ear. A gunman opened fire at a campaign rally in the US state of Pennsylvania and killed a spectator. The 78-year-old arrived in Milwaukee on Sunday, where there were pictures of him at the airport.

After his disastrous performance in the televised debate with his predecessor Trump, US President Joe Biden confirmed that he would face his rival in a second televised debate in September. “I will debate him at the time we agreed on,” Biden said on Monday in an interview with NBC. That time is in September. But he has no plans to appear “at that level” once more, Biden continued. Trump and Biden had their first televised debate at the end of June before the presidential election in November. Since his disastrous performance in the televised debate, Biden has been faced with an ever-growing debate in his Democratic Party regarding his mental suitability for the presidency.

Despite his recent calls for unity in the country and moderation in the election campaign, Biden accused Trump of inflammatory rhetoric. “He is talking regarding a bloodbath if he loses,” Biden told NBC. Trump said that he wanted to suspend the sentences of all those who had been convicted of the attack on the US Capitol on January 6, 2021. Trump’s supporters had violently stormed the parliament building at the time.

When asked what he himself wanted to do to cool down the political debate in the country, Biden said in the interview that he would continue to talk regarding the things that matter. Referring to Trump, he said that this included whether someone accepted the result of an election or called migrants “vermin.” This was inflammatory language. After the assassination attempt on their party colleague, Trump’s staunch supporters accused the incumbent president of his rhetoric towards the Republican being partly responsible for the attack. Biden regularly describes his rival as a threat to US democracy.

Meanwhile, the director of the US Secret Service, Kimberly Cheatle, admitted mistakes in the shooting during a Trump rally, but ruled out resigning. “I am the director of the Secret Service, and it is my job to ensure that we conduct an investigation and provide our employees with the necessary resources,” Cheatle said. The intelligence chief described the assassination attempt as “unacceptable.”

The Secret Service has come under fire for the gun incident. The agency has launched a comprehensive investigation into the incident to determine the exact circumstances and identify potential security gaps.
