The lady of popular Carupana theatre, Juliana Sucre, was remembered and honoured this Friday, with a cultural show at the entrance of the Ateneo de Bermúdez, in the state of Sucre, on the occasion of what would have been her 85th birthday.
Mireya Medina, daughter of Sucre and one of the founders of the Escobita de Monte Group, recalled the figure of the cultural figure, who was declared a Living Heritage of Sucre at the time.
Medina, who is also the state’s deputy director of culture, said they wanted to hold a party to keep alive the legacy of Juliana, who raised the level of street and community theater performances throughout the state.
Journalist Esteban Mieres, who was part of Escobita de Monte and toured communities with his performances, recalled that the theater group was founded by Sucre and Magaly Fariñas, another cultural activist, in 1984, following some workshops that were given at the Ateneo de Carúpano.
The immediate consequence was the birth of Escobita de Monte, which was very popular and survives to this day. The name of the group was given by Luis Mariano Rivera himself, in a humorous way, because of the style of theatre they did, very traditional and popular, focusing on everyday life as a format.
In 2004, Escobita de Monte became a foundation, said Mieres, who is a sort of chronicler of the group.
Humble
“Today marks the 85th anniversary of Juliana’s birth, in Güiria, in an area called La Iglesia, on the coast, already abandoned, there were three little houses left,” said Mieres, going through some of the events that marked the life of someone who is still today a reference in Sucre’s popular culture.
Mieres said that as a teenager, Juliana moved to Güiria and from there to Carúpano, where she married Virgilio Medina, the father of her children, and worked at the Ropero Negra Matea, which earned her a nickname all her life.
Such was Sucre’s identification with the historical figure that she became the black Matea of the national zarzuela Alma Llanera, which at the time toured the entire country with great success.
The journalist highlighted the great career of Escobita de Monte, which led it to participate in national festivals, with tributes to its creator Juliana Sucre, who became a prominent actress of zarzuelas and popular theater.
