WASHINGTON (AP) — Jalen Green tied his career high with 42 points and the Houston Rockets closed the third quarter on a 25-6 run en route to their sixth straight victory, beating the Washington Wizards 137-114 on Tuesday.
Houston is two and a half games behind Golden State in the fight for the last berth to the Western Conference mini-tournament. Amen Thompson scored 25 points for the Rockets and Fred VanVleet had seven points and 11 assists.
Corey Kispert contributed 16 points for Washington, which is without Kyle Kuzma (left shoulder), Deni Avdija (right knee), Tyus Jones (back) and Bibal Coulibaly (right wrist).
Even with those absences, the Wizards scored well from three-point range to keep the game close for the first two and a half periods. Green broke the tie with two three-pointers and a three-point play to go up 85-76. After a pair of free throws by Washington, the Rockets had seven straight points and the Wizards might no longer get closer.
Green had 15 points in the third period, to go with 10 rebounds in the game. His best mark of the season so far was 37 points — on Thursday, also once morest Washington.
