Wisła Kraków and Pogoń Szczecin in a final full of subtexts
  • Wisła Kraków and Pogoń Szczecin advanced to the Polish Cup final.
  • The final of the competition will take place on May 2 in Warsaw, at the PGE Narodowy stadium.
  • For Pogoń, it will be a chance to win their first trophy for the showcase. However, the presence of Wisła fans in the stands is questionable, which is why the club’s president threatened to give up the match.

The semi-final matches of the Polish Cup were played on Wednesday, April 3. The first players to fight for promotion were the players of the first league Wisła Kraków and Piast Gliwice, playing in the Ekstraklasa. “Biała Gwiazda” turned out to be better on the pitch and defeated the team from Gliwice 2:1.

The team from Kraków (currently in fifth place in the 1st league), fighting to return to the PKO BP Ekstraklasa, has won the Polish Cup four times in the past. Wisła coach Albert Rude emphasized following the match once morest Piast that his team deserved another victory in this tournament. – Recently I asked how long Wisła waited to advance to the final, it was regarding 15 years ago. So we must be very happy with what we have achieved. This is also thanks to coaches Sobolewski and Jop (Radosław Sobolewski and Mariusz Jop, previous coaches of Wisła Kraków – ed.), who won cup matches – said Rude.

Polish Cup final without Wisła Kraków fans? The club’s president announces a walkover

The final match from the stands of the PGE Narodowy stadium will be watched by, among others: 10 thousand Pogoń Szczecin fans. Wisła Kraków fans are entitled to the same number of seats, but their presence is questionable. The problem in this case is the travel ban imposed on “White Star” fans last season. It was supposed to apply for the next two matches, but in the current edition of the Polish Cup they played all matches at home.

In order for Wisła Kraków fans to be able to take part in the final, the Polish Football Association must suspend the penalty. The club’s president, Jarosław Królewski, cannot imagine any other solution. After Wednesday’s (April 3) match with Piast, he announced on social media that if the fans do not go to the National Stadium, the team will forfeit the match once morest Pogoń. – None of the people employed by the club will show up for the match that day – emphasized the president of Wisła Kraków.

Polish Cup: Pogoń Szczecin with a chance to win its first trophy

In the second semi-final match, Pogoń Szczecin advanced to the Polish Cup final. The Port team defeated Jagiellonia Białystok 2-1 following overtime. Frederik Ulvestad scored the winning goal for Pogoń.

The team from Szczecin has not had any major successes yet – the national championship or the Polish Cup. “Portowcy” appeared in the finals of the latter three times; for the last time in 2010, where they lost to… Jagiellonia Białystok. Previously, Pogoń lost to Legia Warszawa and Lech Poznań (1981 and 1982, respectively).

The lack of trophies will certainly motivate the Port team to fight at the National Stadium. Their form can be proven by the fact that Jagiellonia, defeated in the semi-finals, is currently the leader of the Ekstraklasa; Pogoń, in turn, is sixth in the table. – Dear Szczecin team: if not now, when? – asks Dariusz Urbanowicz from the sports editorial office of Radio Trójka.
