Wisconsin Badgers Prove Sport transcends Borders in California Wildfire Relief Effort

The Wisconsin men’s basketball team arrived in Los Angeles for a West coast swing with a mission beyond the hardwood. Associate Director of engagement adn Community outreach, Wquinton Smith, emphasized this commitment to service, stating, “It’s not just about the playing field but it’s about passions and desires outside of the sport. Community service is one way that we really develop our student-athletes and their self-revelation and self-awareness.”

Their planned visit on Martin Luther King Jr. Day, january 20th, coincided with a devastating wildfire crisis gripping Los Angeles. Thousands of acres had already been consumed by flames, leaving entire neighborhoods in ruins in a scene resembling a warzone more than a suburb. Homes, businesses, and lives were lost, plunging the city into grief and uncertainty.

Yet, amidst the devastation, a wave of compassion flowed through Los Angeles. Thousands flocked to centers like the Westside Food Bank in Santa Monica, eager to offer any assistance they could. Shaun Dryer, the Community Engagement Manager, explained, “westside Food Bank belongs to a federally funded program called TEFAP (The Emergency Food Assistance Program), designed to provide food for low-income families.”

the team’s visit took on new urgency.Smith shared, “Paying close attention to the news and seeing how devastating the fires were, we knew that the food pantry would see an uptick in the amount of services they needed to provide. So it definitely changed the lens in which we originally went into it.”

The Badgers, including coaches and staff, dedicated a full afternoon to packing 357 TEFAP food boxes during a break between games against USC and UCLA. “I gave them a goal of 200, and they demolished that number,” Dryer said, impressed by their dedication.

The experience left a lasting impact on the players.Redshirt freshman guard Jack Janicki reflected, “It’s a simple thing to do—put food in boxes with a bunch of guys—but leaving there, I felt a lot better about myself and our team, being able to help a lot of people that really need it.”

For many players, it was their first encounter with the scale of the wildfires and the resulting food insecurity. Smith observed, “I think going into it, they didn’t really know what to expect. But when we talked about how the California fires would affect food insecurity for a lot of individuals, that’s when I saw them going back onto the bus, and you could see they were like, ‘Wow, I didn’t know it was this devastating.’”

Genevieve Riutort, President and CEO of the Westside Food Bank, was deeply moved by the team’s actions. She shared, “This spirit demonstrates the kind of care for others that lifts the hearts of a community in crisis. We are so grateful and admire them for being a model of service even when they are far from home.”

For Janicki, the experience illuminated a truth that transcends the world of sports. “There are some things, like helping those in need, that just transcend all boundaries.”
