Compared to last year (2023), the sales during the first month of the winter sales for most stores in the Piraeus market moved lower, as shown by the survey of the Piraeus Chamber of Commerce on the course of the market during the specific period of time, which was carried out with increased participation.
In particular, 6 out of 10 stores moved down compared to last year’s winter sale season, with the majority recording a decrease of up to 20%. 1 in 5 companies moved at the same levels as the previous year.
To the question of how sales moved on Sunday 14.1.2024, the day the stores are open, 42.9% of respondents answered that they recorded lower sales compared to the corresponding period last year, while 38.1% moved at the same levels. A worse result was also recorded on Sunday 21.1.2024, while many shops remained closed, as they considered their operation pointless.
According to the newsit, the expectations of the majority of businesses for the course of sales in the next period are at low levels, while a percentage of 20% sees a positive course of turnover in February.
As noted in a statement:
“The research demonstrates in the clearest way that the market continues to be faced with the limitation of disposable income for the majority of Greek households.
In this period, when the economic climate is generally positive, trade faces significant challenges and uncertainties, the main ones being the continued increase in costs and pressure on demand.”
