The winter sales period will begin on January 3. For bargain lovers, however, you will have to wait a few more days before seeing the discounts show -50% or more. According to Het Laatste Nieuws, the discounts in the first few days will not be as significant as in previous years. If we might see discounts of -70% in the windows, this year, sellers would have to settle for discounts of -30%.
“It’s already a nice discount,” confides Isolde Delanghe, from ModeUnie, to our colleagues at Laatste Nieuws. If the discounts will remain modest at the start of the sales, it is in particular because stocks are lower in stores. Retailers have in fact learned the lessons of recent years, during which sales began with overflowing stocks. “We no longer have really harsh winters. This is why we buy less real winter clothing for the winter collection , we are organized accordingly,” explains Isolde Delanghe. “We are also increasingly experiencing longer ends of summer, so our members are buying more transitional clothing, as well as items that can be combined.”
Shein, the new yellow peril where no holds barred
Stores also suffer from competition from online stores, and sometimes compete with themselves by offering lower prices on their webshop than in stores. However, physical commerce is not set to disappear, reassures Isolde Delanghe. “A consumer who chooses a store is not looking for pants 10 euros cheaper. He makes his choice because he knows he will find quality and service there. Ask the saleswoman which blouse matches your pants, then you will receive personalized advice: you won’t find this online.”
