The number of residential burglaries is higher each year during the winter months, when the days get shorter and people spend more time with family and friends. Therefore, for the third year in a row, the number of burglaries increased during the dark months of January and December. The General Directorate for Security and Prevention has also warned of the risks linked to the end-of-year festivities.
A new technique used by burglars takes on worrying proportions: police zones call for vigilance
During the winter period, burglars rely on unattended homes, taking advantage of the longer nights and reduced presence of residents. “This is a well-known phenomenon that the police warn regarding every year. In 2022, the number of burglaries during the dark months in Belgium was around 36% higher than during the rest of the year, with traditionally a significant peak during the holidays,” says Joost Dejaeger, CEO of CitySafes. “Moreover, this trend is not only visible in Belgium, but also in the Netherlands, Germany and Denmark, where we receive hundreds of requests for safes every month. People need to be aware of this risk and take the necessary steps to protect their property,” adds Dejaeger.
