(CNN) — As a powerful atmospheric river begins to move toward the coast through California, heavy snow is spreading across the rest of the western United States. Nine states are currently under some type of winter weather advisory in association with this storm.
Across the Sierra Nevada mountain range, heavy snowfall is ongoing above 2,134 meters. Snow accumulations of half a meter to 1 meter are expected at 2,100 meters of altitude. Snowfall might reach 0.5 to 1 meter, at a height of 2,400 meters or more. Snowfall above 2,700 meters is forecast between 1.8 and 2.4 meters. Winds are also expected to gust up to 120 km/h, creating white storm conditions.
Snowfall in parts of Nevada, Oregon, and Idaho is also ongoing, where 6 to 12 inches is possible through lower elevations, and two feet of snow is possible through higher elevations. This snowfall is expected to move into Utah, western Colorado and Montana by early Friday morning, where up to two feet of snow is also possible.
A storm system is prompting winter weather watches from South Dakota to Connecticut, but New York is not on a winter weather watch at this time. This storm is not connected to the powerful atmospheric river that is impacting the west. Overall storm totals over the last 24 hours have been between 5 to 2 inches of snowfall. Higher isolated amounts of 6 to 8 inches of snow have been reported along the Illinois-Wisconsin border.
