Winona Ryder has opened up about the shoplifting scandal in the early 2000s, explaining why it forced her to take a step back from Hollywood.

In an interview with Esquire published online Thursday, the “Stranger Things” actress said the case “had a huge impact” on her life and career.

Ryder was arrested in 2001 for shoplifting from a California department store and later convicted of theft and vandalism. She was sentenced to three years’ probation, fined and ordered to perform community service.

Ryder, who returned to Hollywood several years after the scandal, reprises her role as Lydia Deetz in the upcoming sequel to Tim Burton’s 1988 ‘Bumblebee’

“It’s so funny, there are so many [που λέγονται] around this story, but it really couldn’t be more than my thinking that I’m going to my car to get something…” Ryder told Esquire about her arrest.

“I think I was just checking out”

The actress, who has been open about the shoplifting scandal in the past, shared some details about her life at the time of the incident.

She had been prescribed painkillers for a broken arm and struggled with her mental health, among other things, Esquire wrote.

When asked how she dealt with the publicity the incident received at the time, Ryder said she had “disconnected” to deal with the issues at hand.

“I think I was just checking out,” he said.

Ryder, who returned to Hollywood several years after the scandal, reprises her role as Lydia Deetz in the upcoming sequel to Tim Burton’s 1988 “Bumblebee.”

The new film, “Bumblebee Beetlejuice,” also stars Jenna Ortega, Michael Keaton and Kathryn O’Hara.

According to in.gr, Ortega received rave reviews this week after she was seen in a video showing her support for Ryder as photographers shouted at her to take off her sunglasses for the photos.

“No. You don’t have to,” Ortega was seen telling Ryder, who appeared reluctant to remove her glasses.
