Connor Hellebuyck made 38 saves and Mark Scheifele scored the game-winning goal in overtime to help the Winnipeg Jets earn a 3-2 victory over the Edmonton Oilers.
The Oilers might, however, have lost more than the game in this duel once morest the Jets. Connor McDavid was unable to play the last 4 minutes following a collision on the ice. In discussion with one of the team’s trainers, McDavid appeared to be grabbing his left leg. He remained on the team’s bench, but was unable to take the ice in overtime.
Edmonton, however, started this match with a bang. Darnell Nurse opened the scoring following just 85 seconds of play. McDavid and Leon Draisaitl had assists on Nurse’s first of the season.
The Oilers’ massive attack got going less than five minutes later when Evan Bouchard also scored his first of the season with a powerful slap shot. McDavid and Draisaitl were once once more complicit in the Oilers’ goal.
The Jets special teams then gave Hellebuyck a helping hand. Josh Morrissey first closed the gap with a man advantage with a good slap shot.
Vladislav Namestnikov then did some good work in the back of the territory during a penalty kill and allowed the Jets to tie the game with his first goal of the campaign.
Scheifele gave the Jets the victory by skillfully redirecting Morrissey’s pass past Stuart Skinner. The Oilers goaltender stopped 24 pucks and is still looking for his first victory of the season.
After the game, McDavid did not meet with the media. The team’s head coach Jay Woodcroft did not want to elaborate further on the state of health of his captain. The Oilers will play their next game Tuesday once morest the Wild.
