RACER Francesco Bagnaia won the German GP following Jorge Martin crashed on Sunday (7/7). The victory also brought the Ducati Lenovo rider to the top of the MotoGP standings.

Martin looked set to win the race but made a mistake and crashed on the penultimate lap allowing two-time world champion Bagnaia to secure the podium.

Marc Marquez, who will be Bagnaia’s teammate next season, finished second, while Marquez’s younger brother Alex Marquez finished third to complete the podium.

Martin’s dramatic fall in Germany not only handed Bagnaia the winner’s title, but also the top of the standings.

Bagnaia now has a ten-point lead over Martin heading into MotoGP’s summer break.

“It wasn’t easy. I saw Jorge starting to make mistakes, then when he crashed, I just slowed down a little bit. I’m very happy. It’s the first time I win here, at the Sachsenring,” said Bagnaia, Sunday (7/7).

Marc Marquez has a record of eight wins at the Sachsenring, but the six-time world champion has not won there since 2021.

“I promise you that I would trade a victory to be on the podium with my brother, it’s an incredible feeling,” said Marc Marquez.

The race started very well for Martin. He got ahead of Miguel Oliveira from the start, while Bagnaia moved up to second place by the end of the first lap.

Bagnaia then gave chase and managed to overtake Martin on the following lap, but he was unable to pull away and Martin regained control of the race with 23 laps remaining.

Martin then pulled away, and was able to lead by more than 1.5 seconds over Pramac teammate Franco Morbidelli in second place. Bagnaia dropped to third.

But that only happened for a moment, Bagnaia then overtook Morbidelli and Martin is now almost a second ahead.

Bagnaia kept the pace, and his patience paid off when Martin crashed, allowing the rider nicknamed Pecco to cruise to the finish line. (Ant/Z-1)
