When you hear that a bottle of wine has been awarded by the Gilbert&Gaillard International Wine Competition, you say to yourself that it is a quality wine. And yet… Eric Boschman has just fooled the competition. In fact, the one who was elected best sommelier in Belgium in 1988, presented as part of the program “On n’est pas des pigeons” presented a bottle bought for 2.50 euros from Delhaize as “exceptional”.

For the deception to be credible, the label of the wine in question had been replaced by a more “classy” version with a logo in the shape of a pigeon and the name “Château Colombier”. This wine, which according to the explanations came from a variety of the Sambre-Meuse valley, managed to win the gold medal of the famous competition.

In fact, during the blind tasting, the bottle received a lot of compliments. “Bright garnet red color. Shy nose combining stone fruits, currants, discreet oak. Suave, nervous and rich mouth with clean young aromas that promise a nice complexity. Evolution on fine spices and a touch of soot. Very interesting”.

If the trickery can make you laugh, Eric Boschman wanted to highlight here the lack of rigor of the competition.
