Windy Weather Triggers High Waves, BMKG: Always Be Alert

jpnn.comJAKARTA – The Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) issued an early warning of high waves in the range of 2.5 – 4.0 meters on March 27 – 28 2023.

According to the BMKG, high waves are triggered by wind patterns in the northern part of Indonesia, which predominantly move from the Northeast – Southeast with speeds ranging from 3 to 15 knots.

Meanwhile, in the southern part of Indonesia, the dominant movement is from the East – Southeast with wind speeds ranging from 3 – 15 knots. The highest wind speeds were observed in the central and eastern parts of the Java Sea, Fakfak – Kaimana waters, southern Tanimbar waters and the Arufu Sea.

This condition causes an increase in waves as high as 1.25 – 2.5 meters in the northern waters of Sabang, western waters of Aceh – Mentawai Islands, Bengkulu – Lampung waters, West Indian Ocean of Sumatra, southern waters of Banten – West Java, southern waters of Bali – Sumbawa, Straits Bali – Lombok – southern Alas, southern waters of Sumba Island, South Indian Ocean Bali – NTT, central and eastern Java Sea, northern Madura waters, southern Makassar Strait, Sangihe – Talaud Islands waters, Bitung – Sitaro Islands waters, Maluku Sea , northern waters of Halmahera, Halmahera Sea, northern waters of West Papua – Papua, southern waters of Babar – Tanimbar, Arufu Sea, North Pacific Ocean Halmahera – Papua.

“The potential for high waves in some of these areas might pose a risk to shipping safety,” wrote the BMKG.

BMKG appealed to the public to always be vigilant, especially for fishermen who are active at sea.

In addition, BMKG provides warnings for users of modes of transportation such as fishing boats (wind speeds of more than 15 knots and wave heights above 1.25 m), barges (wind speeds of more than 16 knots and wave heights above 1.5 m). , ferries (wind speeds of more than 21 knots and wave heights above 2.5 m), and large size ships, such as cargo ships / cruise ships (wind speeds of more than 27 knots and wave heights above 4.0 m) are expected to be aware of the potential for high waves.
