Following the Windows Utopia concept, AR 4789 resurrects Windows XP, using its creative abilities to imagine what a modern version of XP might look like in 2024. As with its other concepts, rather than just showing the kind of features we might see in The alternative operating system, the AR 4789 video walks us through the installation and configuration process.
In October 2001, Microsoft presented the first version of Windows XP. The objective is to unite its operating system families (consumer and professional) into a single family, with the aim of reducing development and maintenance costs. Basically, Windows 2000 was supposed to fulfill this role, but the complexity of its administration interface explains its rejection by the general public.
Likewise, in 1999, the Microsoft Neptune project which was to provide the home version of Windows 2000 was abandoned. It was replaced by the Whistler project, incorporating many ideas from the Neptune and Odyssey projects, which gave birth to Windows XP and its two versions: general public and professional. Both versions use the NT kernel and architecture (known as version 5.1). The consumer version is thus the same as the professional version, but it is stripped of all the functions considered unnecessary for domestic use.
In April 2014, Microsoft announced the end of support for Windows XP:

Microsoft has supported Windows XP for the past 12 years. Now is the time for us and our hardware and software partners to invest our resources in supporting newer technologies so that we can continue to bring you new, unforgettable experiences. As a result, technical support for Windows XP is no longer available, including automatic updates to protect your PC.
Microsoft also ended the ability to download Microsoft Security Essentials on Windows XP. If you already have Microsoft Security Essentials installed, you will continue to receive anti-malware signature updates for a limited time. However, note that Microsoft Security Essentials (or any other antivirus software) will have limited effectiveness on PCs without the latest security updates. This means that PCs running Windows XP will not be secure and will be vulnerable to infections.
Windows XP 2024 Edition
Windows XP is an operating system that has marked the history of computing. Released in 2001, it was a phenomenal success and was used by millions of users for more than a decade. Despite the end of its official support in 2014, Windows XP still remains today a system appreciated by many nostalgic people, who find in it qualities that later versions of Windows have not been able to match.
10 years later, as if to pay tribute to him, the designer AR 4789 proposed in a video the Windows XP 2024 Edition project, an unofficial initiative which aims to remaster Windows XP and bring improvements in terms of security, performance, customization and compatibility.
This modern version of the operating system retains the look and color palette of XP, as well as the iconic Bliss wallpaper, but the reinvention also incorporates a number of Windows 11 features, such as quick settings and a dark mode.
The default Start menu looks like it did, but File Explorer has been given a makeover, as have other elements. Users can sign in to Windows XP 2024 Edition with a Microsoft account and, as you would expect, Microsoft Edge also makes an appearance in this concept.
While Windows 11 benefits from artificial intelligence in the form of Copilot, Windows XP 2024 Edition announces the return of Rover, Microsoft’s search assistant.
Expert suggested Microsoft make Windows XP open source
Dan Geer, IT expert, a suggr au Black Hat 2014, that Microsoft gives up all its rights to Windows XP; If a company stops releasing security patches for code, as Microsoft did with Windows XP, then that code should automatically become open source, he said. If you give up a car, a property or a child, you lose your rights to them and this should be true for software as well.
As for embedded systems, manufacturers must either include a remote management system allowing software updates, or have a limited lifespan. Leaving old devices running was a recipe for disaster, Geer warned.
Geer played a crucial role in the development of the X Window System and the Kerberos authentication protocol. When he spoke, he was responsible for security at the CIA’s venture capital fund, In-Q-Tel.
Bientt un Windows 12 ?
Meanwhile, rumors suggest that Windows 12 might release this year. We can cite the words of David Zinsner, CFO of Intel, who spoke with confidence regarding the Windows refresh which, according to him, should take place this year.
Additionally, according to a deleted tweet from leaker and Windows enthusiast @leaf_hobby, Intel listed Windows 12 as one of the supported operating systems for its Meteor Lake-S desktop chips, which would be released this same year.
During the Build 2023 developer conference, Microsoft hinted at several exciting updates for Windows 11. However, one of the most intriguing presentations might be the first confirmation that Microsoft is preparing to launch a next iteration of Windows – potentially Windows 12 During one of the presentations, the audience’s attention was attracted by a screenshot referring to a session entitled “next-gen of Windows”. This session had not been discussed, which aroused the curiosity of participants and technology enthusiasts around the world.
