Windows Notepad will also embrace generative AI

Windows is regarding to integrate artificial intelligence into one of its oldest applications. A report shows that Notepad will add a feature known as Cowriter (co-writer), which would be powered by generative AI. This feature would be released gradually through a software update.

In accordance with a publication of PhantomOcean3, a well-known Windows leaker, Notepad will have its dose of artificial intelligence. Microsoft would follow in the footsteps of Paint, enhancing its classic application with new functions.

Cowriter might enlarge or reduce texts, change the tone or format in which they are written. This feature uses a credit system similar to the one we find in the Bing image creator, where one (or several coins) is deducted when you use it. Notepad also includes an additional feature called “Explain it with Copilot” which is activated when you select a text and right-click on it.

At the moment it is not known when this option will be available. Other user found clues in the XML files that are included in the installation folder, which suggest that Microsoft will activate a waiting list before releasing it to the public. Also featured is an image from Cowriter showing the tool in action.

The version of Notepad with Cowriter artificial intelligence is available in the build latest Windows Insider from the Canary channel. The feature is disabled and requires some additional steps to display in the user interface. For now it doesn’t make much sense to download it, since you would need to sign up for the alpha phase to use it.

Windows will integrate AI into almost all its applications

With the integration of Cowriter in Windows Notepad, Microsoft makes it more than clear that it will not stop until it brings generative AI to all its applications and services. A few months ago he did the same by adding the Magic Paint button to the Paint interface. This function activates a side panel where we can create images from a text instruction.

Other classic Windows applications will also receive changes. On the one hand, Photos would use artificial intelligence to identify people and objects in imageswhile Snipping will recognize text when you take a screenshot, thanks to OCR support.

Microsoft has focused its strategy on Copilotthe assistant powered by artificial intelligence that will come to Windows 11 and Microsoft 365. The technology giant wants to get back the million-dollar investment in OpenAI, so it will not hesitate to add generative AI capabilities wherever it can.

While the offer of a co-writer on Notepad is not unreasonable, it would be more useful to take advantage of the resources to develop an application capable of identifying and resolving the errors that cause the blue screen of death in Windows. Or at least an AI that would catalog all the errors and display a window with the steps to follow.
