Windows activation problems for beneficiaries of migration from Windows 7 and 8

Discontinuing the free Windows 7/8 to Windows 10 migration program seems to cause some collateral damage. Indeed, several Windows 10 users who have benefited from Microsoft’s program are experiencing activation problems following updating the motherboard BIOS or updating their hardware.

For our part, we were faced with the same problem when equipping our graphics card and processor test bench with a new motherboard, seeing us immediately forced to repurchase an activation key.

A complaint filed with the FTC

Several users cited by our colleagues from The Verge encountered this same refusal of activation, even pushing one of them to file a complaint in the United States with the FTC (Federal Trade Commission), the American competition watchdog.

Bill Babonas, Principal Program Manager at Microsoft, says the Seattle company is aware of user complaints and is investigating the matter. It prompts users with activation issues to contact Microsoft customer support.

By ending the Windows 7 and 8 to Windows 10 migration program, Microsoft does not seem to have anticipated that users who benefited from the program might need to activate their hardware once more. It might be time for the company to review the economic model of its operating system, as well as its conditions of use, for example with Windows 12.
