Windows 8.1 will disappear, Microsoft advises the purchase of a new computer

Windows 8.1 will soon be part of Windows history. The operating system will be abandoned on January 10. On this date, all computers under this environment will no longer be affected by security updates and bug fixes.

Windows 7 is regarding to retire for good with three years of Extended Security Updates, and Microsoft is also preparing to retire another version of Windows, Windows 8.1.

The end of his support is scheduled for January 10. Clearly the Patch Tuesday of January 2023 will be its last major maintenance. The giant has been recommending affected customers for several weeks to upgrade to a more recent version of the operating system.

Unfortunately the operation is not so simple especially in front of the advice of the giant who recommends above all Windows 11 and not Windows 10. Suddenly this eventuality results in the need to buy a new computer. Why ? Windows 11 system requirements do not allow a device launched in the Windows 8.1 era to be eligible.

The operation does not translate into the need to save all its data and software, to acquire a new PC and then to reinstall and reconfigure everything, hoping to have no compatibility problems. The cost for the company is therefore not negligible. Can it be absorbed by productivity gains?

Redmond explains

Change can be difficult, but we’re here to help you take the next step. After January 10, 2023, Microsoft will no longer provide security updates or technical support for Windows 8.1. You may be able to upgrade your Windows 8.1 device to a newer version of Windows, but our best option is to upgrade to a new PC capable of running Windows.

Stopping Windows 8.1 maintenance does not mean that the OS will no longer work. It will remain fully functional following January 10, 2023 but it will gradually become vulnerable knowing that all new security vulnerabilities discovered will never be plugged.

Support for Windows 8.1 is discontinued, but the software will continue to work. However, following January 10, 2023, your computer will no longer receive security updates. Additionally, Microsoft Customer Service will no longer be available to provide Windows 8.1 technical support.

The good news is regarding its popularity. The various statistics show that its market share is low.
