On September 1st, Microsoft published a document on its website announcing the discontinuation of WordPad on Windows 11, as Oficina da Net reported. According to the statement, the plan is to no longer offer WordPad in both Windows 11 and future versions of the operating system.

WordPad is no longer being updated and will be removed in a future version of Windows.

Removing WordPad from Windows caused a lot of users to be furious, but there were also those who didn’t mind. Although WordPad is not as popular as Notepad or Microsoft Word, many people liked it because it is a lighter program that does not require a lot of computer resources compared to Word, for example. A user said on Feedback Hub the next:

I use WordPad for RTF files because it loads faster than MS Word. I keep reference notes in RTF format, as Notepad does not allow text formatting. Add WordPad to the Microsoft Store like you did MS Paint when it was discontinued from Windows.

While WordPad is missed by some, others consider the text editor a hindrance, something that should stay in the past. However, there are people who claim that the program has its usefulness due to the way it handles RTFs. A user says:

Using WordPad, I can easily create RTF email signatures without any unnecessary extra details. Doing the same thing in Word makes the file much bigger.

For many people, using .RTF files is still commonplace. A user says:

I tend to use .RTF for simple documents because they aren’t heavy. I used WordPad yesterday to jot down the steps for a server task. It’s great when you don’t want a show with a lot of words and you’re not online. It’s the only built-in tool for placing text and images in a document.

There is also the group of people who have longed for updates to WordPad adding, for example, the spelling and grammar checking feature present in Microsoft Word. However, the Windows developer has made it clear that it has no plans to release any more updates for WordPad on its operating system.
