When Windows 11 was released, a few rare features promised by Microsoft were postponed. Among them, there is a very cute one that many people were waiting for. While we thought this project was simply and simply abandoned, now Microsoft’s 3D emojis are talking regarding them once more. A priori, their release is soon!
Why so many people were waiting for Windows 11 3D emojis?
Emojis are a much more interesting topic than you might think. Entering our daily newspapers, these small icons can even be legally recognized by courts (click on this link to find out more, it is a long history of agriculture and lawsuits involving an emoji). Emojis not only help inflect the tone of a text message and express emotion, they also do two much more essential things that our brain loves.
1) Express your personality : like the clothes we wear, the emojis we use allow us to express a certain self-image to the world. 2) Expressing membership in a groupto a community: the different social groups (gender, age, social or geographical origin, etc.) all use different emojis.
Have you ever heard of those people who say they’re ready to go broke on an iPhone largely because they consider Apple’s emojis to be the prettiest on the market? Tell me what are your favorite emojis and I’ll tell you who you are.
For these two essential reasons, Microsoft fans were extremely excited in 2021, when the Redmond firm’s 3D emojis were revealed. The tech giant finally offered its vision of what emojis should be and they have a lot more: like those of Apple, Windows emojis manage to combine a strong aesthetic bias and great care given to the finishes.

In August 2022, already a year ago, the “Fluent Emojis”, because it is the official name of these icons that all the press calls “3D emojis”, had a news: the passage of 1538 models in Open Source. Suffice to say that the general public does not care at all regarding being able to download all these little icons on Microsoft’s official Github. The general public doesn’t even know what a Github is. In addition, this flatter Open Source version of Fluent Emojis has much less charm than the original project of which Internet users were a fan.

It’s now official, real Windows 11 3D emojis should arrive for everyone in the big update slated for October. How do we know? A group of people have access to test versions of Windows before the arrival of major updates to the operating system. These Insiders are those who track down bugs for the general public. In the last version of Windows 11 that they were able to test, surprise: the 3D emojis were there, usable! If all goes as planned, it’s only a matter of weeks before you too can place them wherever you want. Finally.
Ah, and don’t get me wrong with the nickname “3D emoji”, the little yellow men and other paper clip designs (have the reference?) are nothing special. At the risk of disappointing you, the “3D emojis” are not going to come out of your screen. If they are nicknamed this way, it is because THE great particularity of their design is the care given to the relief of the images. These emojis look a lot like 3D models from animated movies or video games, that’s all.
