Windows 11 receives its first major update. Android apps are coming soon.

Windows 11 users will receive their first major update. Windows 11 22H2, of its small name, begins to be deployed on eligible machines, perfectly within the time announced by the rumors of the last month. After long weeks spent in beta, the annual update of Microsoft’s OS is finally available to the general public.

Improvements in small touches

A little less than a year following the official release of this new version of Windows, Microsoft arrives with arms loaded with new features for this update. The Start menu gains in customization, with support for application folders. To create one, simply move the icon of a software on another, as on a smartphone. Still on the Start menu, it is possible to reduce the place occupied by the “recommended” elements which try to offer you the software adapted to your habits.

Other more discreet interface changes are coming with this update. Microsoft, for example, continues to modernize its old applications from Windows 7 and 8. On the productivity side, Windows 11 22H2 improves the docking of windows at a corner of the screen with suggestions for applications to be displayed face to face. Those using Windows 11 on a touchscreen will also be pleased to hear that gesture support has been improved and makes it easier to switch between software with a flick of the wrist.

In terms of more discreet new features, there is a strengthening of system security with Smart App Control, which will verify that unauthorized applications or scripts do not interfere with the experience. The US version of the system has also improved accessibility settings by integrating live captioning, improved voice navigation and screen reading. Unfortunately, these new features are currently not available in France — unless you use your OS in English.

Android apps are coming soon

The novelties excluded from this new version of Windows are almost more notable than those already available. Thus, Android applications are still not officially available in France and the file explorer still does not have the right to tab browsing, which has been claimed for years. Good news though, both should arrive in the coming weeks. Microsoft officially announced that just over 20,000 Android applications were going to arrive on the French Microsoft Store”in the coming weeks” and that the tabbed browsing system will be available following another update scheduled for October.

If the 22H2 update has not been offered to you automatically, don’t panic, as usual, Microsoft is rolling out its new system in waves. If you absolutely want to install it as soon as possible, you can go to the “Settings” application and then to the “Windows Update” section to force an update search. Otherwise you can also go through theassistant d’installation de Windows 11. If you’re using Windows 10, don’t worry either, the system will continue to receive updates through 2025, starting with its own version of 22H2 later that month. There is no need to scrap your computer and buy a new one compatible with Windows 11, contrary to the message that Microsoft is trying to convey by explaining “that there’s never been a better time to buy a new PC“. You can keep your old machine, the planet will thank you.
