How to use HDR wallpapers in Windows 11?

After doing the above procedure, you should get Windows 11 build 23516 (or higher) and go to Settings > System > Display > HDR. Follow the steps below to access the new feature.

Step 01: Download an HDR image in JXR format. Microsoft provides sample images for download and test it if you want.

Step 02: Open the “Settings” app and select customize.

Step 03: Click Customize Your Background.

Step 04: Select “Picture” and then click “Browse Photos”.

Step 05: Choose the JXR file you want to set as your desktop background.

What happens if I use one monitor that supports HDR and another that doesn’t?

If you use two monitors and one of them does not support HDR, Windows 11 will adapt the background according to the resources of each screen. It is important to mention that Microsoft recommends using the HDR Calibration application from the Microsoft Store, as this way you will ensure better image quality when connecting external monitors to your computer.

Release and availability

Support for HDR wallpapers in Windows 11 is currently being tested through the Windows Insider program. Consequently, it is possible that there are bugs and instabilities in the new feature. An example given by Microsoft is the chance that some notebooks have problems with HDR wallpapers, even with support for “high dynamic range”.
