The Windows 11 Start menu might accommodate advertising for apps, this is an “improvement” that Microsoft is first testing with a small audience.
The latest beta of Windows distributed to a limited circle of users brings yet another change to the Start menu. In this strategic place in the system, Microsoft is testing the placement of recommendations – a more digestible term than “ads” – for apps available on the Microsoft Store.
For the example included with the release notes, 1Password is displayed in the “Recommended” box. However, nothing tells the user why this app – which they may never have heard of – is suddenly in their menu. The display can nevertheless be deactivated in the “tip recommendations, app promotions and other” settings.
Microsoft specifies that this is a test, reserved for American users for the moment and with no guarantee that this new feature will be retained. The editor recently tested this same Start menu displaying all apps recently installed and those most frequently used.
Apple also does not hesitate to suggest apps to run its store. These incentives to get new apps, however, have not (yet?) spilled over from the App Store application to spread to the macOS desktop.
Why not an App Store widget with app recommendations, like we already have one for tips
Unless the next macOS this summer arrives with an App Store widget that we will place on the desktop to receive from time to time suggestions for apps to discover…
