Microsoft has made two important announcements around its Windows 10 and Windows 11 operating systems. The first will no longer be affected by feature updates while the second will soon be available in LTSC edition. What is it regarding ?
Before talking regarding Windows 11 LTSC, the discontinuation of feature updates for Windows 10 is a major announcement. Its latest feature update has allowed it to evolve into the 22H2 version. This is now the definitive and final version.
Going forward, Microsoft will only focus on fixing bugs and resolving security issues. Windows 10 will no longer receive new functionality. Its evolution is complete. Support for the Home and Pro editions is planned until October 2025. Microsoft has made no statement regarding the possibility of extending its life through an ESU program, Extended Security Updates.
Microsoft annonce Windows 11 LTSC
The other big news concerns Windows 11. Redmond confirms that an LTSC edition of Windows 11 will be available in 2024. LTSC is the contraction of Long Term Servicing Channel. This is not really a novelty but a catch-up because at the launch of the OS, at the end of 2022, no LTSC edition was announced and offered. There have been editions
- Enterprise,
- Education
- and IoT.
This correction is welcome knowing that Windows 10 is currently the only destination if you wish to opt for such an edition. Microsoft has announced that two LTSC editions of Windows 11
- Windows 11 Enterprise LTSC
- Windows 11 IoT Enterprise LTSC
Their release is scheduled for the second half of 2024. The firm did not reveal any other information. We know it cut the lifecycle of Windows 10 Enterprise and IoT LTSC from 2021 to five years. It is likely that the same policy will be applied to both versions of Windows 11 LTSC i.e. support until 2029.
