Windows 11 continues its modernization, Microsoft “deprecates” Win32 P2P services

Windows 11 continues to evolve. If new features are proposed, Microsoft is also working on its historical functionalities. Some are gradually abandoned. This is for example the case of P2P Win32 services.

Win32 P2P services have facilitated direct interactions between devices, without requiring a central server. These services include different things like Peer Name Resolution Protocol (PNRP), Peer Networking Grouping or even Peer Networking Identity Manager. Note that the PNRP is much more than a service. It is a platform that allows devices to register and determine names non-centrally, bypassing conventional DNS servers. DNS is the contraction of Domain Name System or in French domain name system. Its role on the Web is to make the link between a domain name like ginjfo.com and its physical address in the form of an IP.

For its part, Peer Networking Grouping allows clusters of devices which group together resources and information. They can be open to all or remain limited to certain members, with authentication via passwords or certificates.

This change will be introduced with Windows 11 23H2 update. She is expected within a few weeks. It will offer improvements to the taskbar, the Start menu and the file explorer. All the new features of the Moment 4 update are planned as well as the replacement of Chat by Microsoft Teams in the taskbar or the possibility of renaming a device in Nearby Share (nearby sharing for Windows).
