Windows 10 receives August Patch Tuesday update with security fixes

2023-08-09 20:42:00

On this last Tuesday (8), being the second of the month, Microsoft released its monthly security update, the so-called version B, from August 2023 to Windows Server 20H2 and Windows 10, in the latest versions, 21H2 and 22H2.

The patch is being identified as KB5029244, increasing the builds to 19044.3324 and 19045.3324. You can find standalone links to download the new update at Microsoft Update Catalog at this link. The highlight, naturally, goes to Windows 10 security updates, without major specifications in the changelog.

Microsoft, however, also released a list of known issues, accompanied by a technique to avoid the problem:

Devices with Windows installations created from custom offline media or custom ISO image may have Microsoft Edge Legacy removed by this update, but not automatically replaced with the new Microsoft Edge. This issue is only encountered when custom offline media or ISO images are created by patching this update into the image without having first installed the Unattended Servicing Stack Update (SSU) released on March 29, 2021 or later.
To avoid this issue, make sure to first patch SSU released on March 29, 2021 or later on custom offline media or ISO image before patching LCU. To do this with the combined SSU and LCU packages now used for Windows 10, version 20H2 and Windows 10, version 2004, you will need to extract the SSU from the combined package. Use the following steps to extract the SSU:

Extract the cab from msu via this command line (using the package for KB5000842 as an example): expand Windows10.0-KB5000842-x64.msu /f:Windows10.0-KB5000842-x64.cab
Extract the SSU from the previously extracted cab using this command line: expand Windows10.0-KB5000842-x64.cab /f:*
You will then have the SSU cab, in this example named SSU-19041.903-x64.cab . Slipstream this file into your offline image first, then the LCU.
