Windows 10: Microsoft allows users to pay for extended support after 2025

2023-12-05 15:19:00

Microsoft announced, this Tuesday (05), that it will make available a subscription plan for users who want to extend support for their copy of Windows 10which will stop receiving updates on October 14, 2025. When paying for the service, the program will offer updates of security to the operating system by 2028.

According to the Windows 10 support document, for the first time in history, the extended security update program (“ESU”) will also be available to home users of the operating system. Previously, the company only offered the additional service to eligible organizations.

With this, people who use Windows 10 on their computers will be able to pay for continued support following October 2025, if they do not want to upgrade to Windows 11. Possibly, by the end of the period, Microsoft will have introduced a new generation of the operating system which, according to rumors, will be released as “Windows 12”.

The program ensures that Windows 10 users continue to receive security updates considered “Important” and “Critical”. Subscription is especially useful for organizations that have not yet migrated to a newer generation of Windows.

Those who choose not to pay for the subscription will still be able to use their computers normally, however, Microsoft will no longer offer fixes for discovered security issues or new threats to Windows 10.

For context, Windows 7 received its last extended support update in January 2023 — more than twelve years following its release. Windows 10 was introduced in July 2015, so its lifecycle might be even longer.

Programs optimized for Windows 10 may not work correctly on Windows 11, and for businesses, it may not be feasible to adapt their software at this time. With the support extension, organizations will have more time to make necessary adjustments and migrate to a new platform.

Microsoft has not yet revealed the prices that will be charged for extended support for Windows 10, but says that this information will be released soon.

Windows 10 even more popular than Windows 11

According to data from StatCounter, Windows 10 still accounts for 68.02% of all computer users with the Microsoft operating system. The consolidated position of this version hinders the growth of Windows 11, which holds only 26.63% of market shareaccording to statistics for the month of November 2023.

Comparing the first year of availability, the older version of the operating system had a much faster growth than the current generation which, in the period between October 2021 and October 2022, reached a share of just 15.45% among devices with software from Microsoft. Windows 10, from its launch in July 2015 until its first “anniversary” in 2016, achieved 28.24% market share.
