Wind turbines and hydropower supplied significantly more electricity in January

The wind turbines fed 1.13 terawatt hours (TWh) of electricity into the public grid, more than in any month before. The hydroelectric power plants delivered 3.35 TWh.

The extremely good water flow of the Austrian rivers in January 2024 – the generation coefficient reached 1.49, the highest January value since records began – contributed to an enormous increase of 60.4 percent in feed-in from run-of-river power plants, explained E-Control.

Imports declining

Due to the high volumes of electricity generated in Austria, imports fell by 37.2 percent. Overall, around 0.55 TWh more electricity was exported than imported in January.

The lower temperatures compared to January 2023 were also reflected in gas consumption. At 11.21 TWh, 1.3 TWh or 13.1 percent more gas was delivered to Austrian end customers. The additional consumption corresponds almost exactly to the increase in heating degree days, also by 13 percent, to 554 heating degree days in January 2024, compared to 490 in January 2023.
