Stan Wawrinka leaves London with still many question marks, despite an improving level of play.

Stan Wawrinka, you seem touched, almost annoyed by this defeat. Are we wrong?

No. It was a complicated game and I came away disappointed and frustrated. I didn’t like the way I played. And above all, I expected to elevate my game to a whole new level. I had pushed hard in training over the past few days, the signals were good. I expected much better. It’s disappointing.

What did you miss tonight? Is the lack more physical or mental?

I think it’s mostly a matter of trust. When I look for her, I think too much. Having multiple options in the exchange gives me problems. And I become hesitant: in the way I move and choose my shots. It’s no surprise, I know the process. But I need victories to find simplicity. Tonight’s game is not going to help me.

Aren’t you a little hard on yourself? The first set was down to nothing and you dominated the proceedings in the second…

Of course there were some good times. By sequences, the level was there. Tomorrow or in a few days, this observation may take up a little more space. Not now. And then, these good sequences, I was not able to stretch them. I lack confidence in what I do. I can see that I’m looking for myself and that gives me the impression of playing with the handbrake.

The demanding look you put on your performance proves at least something: since April, you have come a long way?

It’s true. I am in a totally different situation from when I returned to the circuit. I am in much better physical shape. Tennistically, I also advanced. And that is precisely why I feel in a position to win matches like today. Even if I know that there is always a gap between what we offer in training and what translates into a match, this progression generates frustration. Afterwards, I am convinced internally that we continue to do things correctly, I will eventually get there. I just have to get back on the court, put the work back on the job.
