In the second round of Wimbledon, the Spaniard Davidovich Fokina lost to Jiri Vesely, a Czech. After three hours and 52 minutes of play, the Spaniard was sanctioned by the referee with a penalty in the super tie-break, synonymous with defeat for Davidovich.
We are then in the fifth and last set of the match. The score is 6-3, 5-7, 6-7, 6-3, 6-6 and 8-7 in the super tie-break. Davidovich commits an unforced error which allows his opponent to have two match points, it’s 9-7.
Disappointed with his last point, the Spaniard then hits a ball skyward in frustration. Only the referee, Carlos Ramos, believes that the gesture of the 37th in the world deserves a warning. And as it is his second of the game, it becomes a one-point penalty.
At 9-7 in the super tie-break, the error is therefore fatal for the Spaniard who will not be able to defend himself on his opponent’s match point. Despite some protests, the referee will not change his decision. After the match ended, Davidovich sat on his bench for a few moments, stunned by the turn of events.
