MELBOURNE, Australia (AP) — Wimbledon champion Marketa Vondrousova was eliminated in the first round of the Australian Open on Monday, defeated 6-1, 6-2 by Dayana Yastremska.
The seventh seed Vondrousova did not participate in the preparation tournament in Adelaide due to a hip injury and struggled to serve at all times, committing seven double faults, and being widely surpassed by the number 93 in the ranking.
Yastremska, who had lost in the first round in the last seven Grand Slams, had 26 winners.
In another morning match, tournament No. 19 Elina Svitolina advanced to the second round by defeating Australian wild card Taylah Preston 6-2, 6-2.
Coco Gauff and Naomi Osaka were preparing to start their journey later in the tournament.
Gauff, who won her first Grand Slam title at the US Open in September last year, will face Karolina Schmiedlova of Slovakia.
Osaka, a four-time major winner, will make her long-awaited return to a Grand Slam following the birth of her daughter. Her opponent will be Caroline Garcia, from France, in the first round, in the last scheduled match on center court.
