The long-awaited sensation did not take place. Stan Wawrinka was turned off by the realism of Novak Djokovic in the third round of Wimbledon. After two tasteless sets, however, the Vaudois was able to raise his head in the third set to give a thrill to the Center Court audience. But the Serb managed as usual to close the game at the right time to win the game in 2 hours and 7 minutes.

A game started at nearly 9 p.m. local (10 p.m. in Switzerland), under a lighted roof to ward off the declining light, which Stan Wawrinka certainly hoped to last until the next day. Very quickly, however, Novak Djokovic made him understand that he did not share this desire: an intractable introduction, disconcertingly solid, which pushed “Stan the Man” into the ropes.

Forced to save three break points in his first service game, the Vaudois immediately showed himself less sovereign than the Serb on his face-offs. A flaw that the quadruple defending champion exploited from the sixth game to take an irremediable advantage: impeccable , both in service and in return, he concluded the first set of a winning lob (3-6).

A recalcitrant first bullet

Still as determined not to leave the slightest opening to Wawrinka, the “Djoker” snatched the serve from the Vaudois from the first game of the second set, then a second time, to very quickly lead 0-4, and finally 1-6, on the bulletin board. The fault of a recalcitrant first ball (only 39%), of which Wawrinka had infinite difficulty in adjusting the sights. And here is the Serb far ahead, too far to hope to believe in a crazy comeback.

In the third set, Novak Djokovic loosened the grip somewhat, offering free points bit by bit. This is also the moment that Wawrinka chose to regain confidence in the commitment, find his rhythm in the exchange, pushing “Nole” to the tie-break. However, the Serb did not compromise on his ability to tighten the game during the decisive moments, to conclude the meeting with his first match point.

Stan Wawrinka will certainly regret never having managed to ignite this meeting, to lift the public of the Center Court in a contagious excitement to switch into the irrational. He must nevertheless take Djokovic’s radical concentration as a compliment: aware of the danger, the man with 23 Grand Slam titles was diligent as rarely not to let “Stanimal” awaken the beast that lies dormant in him.
