WILMINGTON, N.C. (WECT) – Wilmington City Council approved additional funds to the nCino Sports Complex project and more at their meeting on Tuesday, Feb. 20.
The council approved another $544,000 that will go toward extra expenses to install lighting in the parking lot and restrooms of the complex. The funds will be appropriated from a combination of Park Bond Contingency, Parks Open Space Payment in Lieu funds, Parks Capital Balance Interest, debt capacity, and unappropriated interest.
Construction of the complex started in January 2023, and the project is approximately 60% complete per city documents. The project is anticipated to be completed in the late fall of 2024.
The project will have 11 fields, five lit fields and restrooms when construction is finished.
$540,315 was also approved to remove 387 trees around public right-of-ways around the city, and an additional $150,000 will go towards the current contract plus future stump removal and grinding contracts to mitigate a future stump removal backlog.
“Staff were directed to identify tree stumps remaining in the City right-of-way within the 1945 corporate limits, and to have them removed and replaced with new trees as appropriate,” city documents state.
The Wilmington Waterfront might soon be expanding with the council approving a public hearing for $32 million to buy two blocks of riverfront property, construction and equipping of a sports complex, and additional street and sidewalk improvements.
A portion of the money would also be used to repair a bulkhead wall near the future Water Street Park riverfront edge.
A public hearing is currently scheduled for Tuesday, March 19th at 6:30 p.m.
