Willy Borsus was the guest of Bel RTL matin this Monday. At the microphone of Martin Buxant, the Walloon minister in charge of the economy proposed eliminating unemployment benefits over time and calling to order people who miss out on too many job opportunities.
A few months before the elections, our journalist asked Willy Borsus regarding the unemployment rate in Wallonia: “There are 227,000 job seekers in Wallonia, what are we going to do differently?“To this question, the liberal first responds that he”must be part of a faster dynamic in terms of support“.
Nothing new so far, underlines Martin Buxant. The minister, currently in charge of the economy, then continues: “We must direct people towards professions in shortage. What is the point of directing people towards professions, sectors which do not lead to employment, even though we have 158 professions which are either under pressure or in shortage in the Walloon Region?“
A question then arises: guide or force? To the guest to respond: “From the moment we are offered twice, for example, a suitable job or training which is suitable, because it is in line with our abilities, it is obvious that if we do not seize these possibilities, we must be called to order and if necessary, be sanctioned.”
In other words, eliminate unemployment benefits. The minister also proposes to cut these allowances following two years: “We are the only country where unemployment benefits are unlimited in time. It is therefore obvious that we must support people who have lost their jobs, but once the months have passed and the people have been supported, we must be able to help them through another mechanism.“, he says.
However, it is important to emphasize that these are only proposals made in the context of upcoming elections. They will have to be defended in a coalition anyway and for the moment, no other Walloon party seems to support them.
