The original plan to pair Willie Nelson with a contemporary bluegrass musician has come to an end thanks to producer Buddy Cannon (“dit’s way too gimmicky!“) on an external track only California Sober remained.

Bluegrass itself, Nelson’s 74th solo album (and first since My Own Peculiar Way from 1969 without trigger!), on the other hand, takes a more puristic path: the 90-year-old covers with a squad of top musicians as support in addition to the Waylon Jennings collaboration (exemplary in a relaxed manner). Good Hearted Woman eleven songs from his own repertoire – soulful, authentic and calm.
The instruments, built around dobro, banjo, fiddle and co., are put to the service of the songs with a lot of class, play without gimmicky mannerisms, and Nelson’s vocal color also fits the ambience of the genre particularly well.

A gentle contrast from a few more up-tempo numbers (No Love Around, Bloody Mary Morning, Slow Down Old World or Still Is Still Moving to Me) and (even better, because it’s sentimental but never kitschy) laid-back pieces – like the calm and thoughtful one Somebody Pick Up My Piecesof melancholic nostalgia Sad Songs and Waltzesthe leisurely sailing one Home Motel as well as the worried one You Left Me a Long, Long Time Ago or the swaying one Yesterday’s Wine – ensures an entertaining dynamic in the clear lines Bluegrass until his final symbiosis of escapism (On the Road Again) and tongue-in-cheek positioning of the point of view (Man With the Blues) turns into a very excellent alternative quasi-work show that actually didn’t need any external colleagues. What’s more: even the (actually traditionally absurd) artwork is clear!
