Towards a new reallocation of employment: winners and losers

In the midst of the climatic turmoil, the French economy is facing a necessary change. The goal? Reduce CO2 emissions from 408 million tonnes in 2022 to 270 million in 2030, according to the wishes of Prime Minister Elisabeth Borne. So, a great shuffling of workstations is preparing. Indeed, according to the Direction of the animation of research, studies and statistics (Dares) for France Strategy, some outlines are emerging on the employment front. A rearrangement that means job creation in some areas and cuts in others.

This transition is not without tension. The climate objective might intensify recruitment difficulties in certain sectors that are already under pressure. Some sectors would see their number of jobs decline while others will gain, particularly in building trades. These might create 100,000 to 200,000 new jobs by 2030.

The rise of green jobs and the challenges of professional retraining

Sectors such as research and development and engineering might also see a significant number of job creations, as well as equipment maintenance. In addition, the automotive industry might do well. But only if the share of clean vehicles reaches more than a third of the market. However, job reallocation is not without its challenges. The transport sector might record a loss of nearly 10,000 jobs by 2030, according to Dares.

In this great upheaval in employment, professional retraining becomes a necessity. However, current systems, such as the Collective Transitions system, are not yet sufficient according to Dares. It is therefore crucial to improve these mechanisms to ensure a soft landing. for all workers affected by this transition to a low-carbon economy.
