Will there be mines on the border with the Russian Federation? The Latvian military gave an answer

This was stated on Thursday by Colonel Guntars Strazditis, Deputy Head of the Operational Planning Department of the Joint Headquarters of the National Armed Forces, in a conversation organized by the portal “Sargs.lv”.

At the moment, it can be observed that in all military purchases the industry does not keep up with demand, and mine manufacturers are no exception. “We have identified potential suppliers, but we must understand that we are competing with the armed forces of other countries, because, looking at the example of Ukraine, mines are seen as a good and not very expensive means of fighting the enemy,” Strazditis said.

“Before we go through any specific procurement procedures with the manufacturers, I think it is too early to say whether we will be able to get them on time or not. Now we look at it positively,” the colonel added.

He also recalled that the Ministry of Defense planned to purchase various anti-tank and guided anti-personnel mines. In peacetime, minefields will not be deployed, but these munitions will be stored in guarded warehouses near the border so that they can be quickly deployed if necessary.
